As a member in good
standing of the Canadian Soccer Association, the Carleton Place
Soccer Club endorses the concept of "pyramid of play".
We believe that players and teams improve when faced with worthy
opponents and rise to the challenge. The Carleton Place Soccer
Club offers two distinct types of soccer experience for players.
The focus in each
league and each division is on the development of players, referees
and coaches and not on winning and losing. The Club supports
this philosophy of development. When the Coaching Committee
sees that we have a strong team in any division, we encourage
it to move up the pyramid of play.
The Goulbourn Lanark Soccer League, or GLSL, offers a single
level of recreational play and this is the base where most players
begin. CPSC teams practice once a week and have a game once
a week. They play other teams from Almonte, Munster, Stittsville
and Richmond. The statistics for each game are kept and trophies
are awarded at the end of the season for the winning teams.
In addition a round-robin tournament is held at the end of August
or beginning of September.
Our Club also enters teams in
more competitive leagues. The East Region Soccer League, or
ERSL, runs divisions for youth teams. The Ottawa Carleton Soccer
League, or OCSL, runs divisions for adult teams.
In the ERSL there
are 3 progressively competitive levels of play and a promotion/relegation
system. At the end of each season the first two teams in each
division are promoted to the next level and the last two teams
are relegated to the lower level. The ERSL pyramid levels begin
with Division 1, then Premier, then Regional which feeds into
the Ontario Youth Soccer League.
The commitment
level is higher for competitive teams. Players must have demonstrated
a higher level of soccer skills and focus during practice and
games. There may be multiple practices a week and there is a
possibility of some weekend games. The parents must be willing
to match this commitment by driving players to games farther
afield.
We will have new field
ready for play in the spring located at Notre Dame. The existing
2 Notre Dame fields were rebuilt in the fall and the lit field
will also be ready for spring field. Notre Dame 2 will be ready
in the autumn.

The CPSC sincerely
appreciates the following sponsors who provide support for our
Club: Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 192) for the use of their
photocopier and Tim Horton’s for donating the shirts for
Soccer School.
The Town of
Carleton Place, Beckwith Township and Mississippi Mills share
many major costs with us. Please check our new sponsorship policy
on our website.
The Carleton Place
Soccer Club is an amazing organization of about 1100 players.
Children and adults are able to enjoy the wonderful game of
soccer within our community thanks to the many volunteers each
year.
Once again we encourage
each of you to give some of your time to assist our Club. There
is a job for everyone of every talent from coaches, managers
and referees to Club executive. Don't have soccer background?
No problem! We have a wealth of experience to help you help
us. Your contribution may vary from 4 hours once a season to
a year round commitment made by the Board members. Indicate
your interest on the Volunteer Sheet included with the registration
form.

More coaches are needed!
The goal of the Club
is to promote and support the game of soccer by providing young
people and adults with the opportunity to play the game. However,
the number of coaches available governs or may restrict the
number of teams the Club can field. Coaches and assistant coaches
and managers are required at many levels and ages. Please indicate
your availability on the Volunteer Sheet or contact Ruben Vella
or for Soccer School, Liane Clarke-Phillips.
Everyone interested
in coaching a team must complete the ‘Coaches Application’
form found on the Club website. This is required by all coaches
– new and returning.
Each application must
be completed in full and returned as soon as possible. At the
October Coaches’ Meeting, it was recommended that the
deadlines be advanced by two weeks. Planning ahead during the
winter will allow the coaches committee to concentrate on other
major issues that will arise during the first few months of
the year.
ERSL coaching applications
must be completed online before January 31. Most of these coaches
have been contacted during the fall.
GLSL coaching applications
must be received before February 10.
These coaches will
be contacted by the end of February.
Our players improve dramatically when coaches
have concrete plans for skill development. In support of coaches,
the Club has contracted Tony Waiters with his curriculum, Byte
Size Soccer. This program has been used successfully for several
years in British Columbia. It will be available by password
on our web site for coaches’ use during the season.
The Club will host coaching clinics for level
1 and 2 by mid-April. Coaches will be contacted as soon as EODSA
sets the dates. Level 3 coaching certification is mandatory
in ERSL. Level 3 clinics will probably be in Ottawa. The cost
of $85 per coach will be paid by the Club.

All coaches are encouraged to take the National Coaching Certification
Program (NCCP) theory courses. Algonquin College and the University
of Ottawa offer theory courses for Levels 1, 2 and 3. These
courses are usually offered in February and March. Inquiries
can be made through Head Coach Ruben Vella.
Are you looking for
a fun summer job that lets you help your soccer club, and make
money at the same time? Why not sign up to become a Carleton
Place Soccer Club Referee. The Club will supply you with a uniform
(shirt, socks and card wallets) and refund your training fee
if you referee 10 or more games. We need both youth and adult
refs.
The pay is great!
You will be paid $10 to $26 per game depending on the assigned
game and your level of experience. All new referees will be
assigned as Assistant Referee or mini field (U8 – U10
GLSL) games to start to develop your skills.
Refereeing is a great
way to develop self-confidence and looks great on a résumé.
We are looking for people who are at least 14 years old, love
soccer and are committed to making the CPSC the best it can
be.
Please indicate
your interest on the Volunteer Sheet or contact Irv Emmanuel,
Head Ref.
All new referees must
attend an OSA entry-level (C4) course in the spring before receiving
certification to referee. The C4 course is 12 hours in length
and involves both classroom instruction and practical skills
training. Participants must be 14 years of age as of January
1, 2005. After being certified by the OSA, new referees must
also attend a CPSC in-house clinic focusing on GLSL modifications
to the Laws of the Game and additional assistant referee training.
The Club has a Junior Referee Program
to improve the skill and confidence level of younger referees
who officiate games on mini fields. The junior referees are
assigned to large field games as assistant referees. By observing
the senior referee assigned to the game, they gain knowledge,
experience, and confidence that can be applied when refereeing
mini-field games.
Returning referees
must have their renewal certification processed by OSA before
refereeing.
The Board of Directors was elected
at the Annual General Meeting held in October 2004. We welcome
all new and returning Board members. New Directors are Sue Emmanuel,
Secretary, and Karen Deutscher, Director at Large. Steve Dunnill
will assist Ruben Vella as Director of GLSL teams.
Aisha Toor has left
the Board and we sincerely thank her for her work with volunteers.
As the CPSC has grown in size the sheer volume of routine, but
necessary, tasks has grown beyond the level where it can reasonably
be expected for a volunteer to carry out all these tasks. The
Board has made some administrative changes that reflect this.
A Club Administrator has been contracted for 6 months. We now
have a Club phone line and email account. We are confident this
will make it easier for Club members to get the answer to questions
in the easiest way possible.
The Club rigorously adheres to
all regulations in our registration procedures.
The 2005 soccer season
begins with the mail-in registration in January for returning
players and an open registration in early February. Registration
includes a completed registration form, a cheque for player
fees and a cheque for shirt deposit.
A family of 3 registered players is eligible for a 20%
discount on the total registration fee. A family of 4 or more
registered players is eligible for a 25% discount. A woman who
plays on 2 teams is eligible for $35 discount on her total fee
but is counted as only 1 player when calculating the family
discount.
A of $50 is required
for each player (except Soccer School) at the time of registration.
The deposit cheque should be postdated to October 31, 2005.
When the Club shirt is returned at the end of the season the
post-dated cheque will be destroyed. If the Club shirt is not
returned before Oct. 31, 2005 your cheque will be cashed.
Make the two cheques
payable to “Carleton Place Soccer Club Inc.”. Payment
is due in full at the time of registration. After April 1, any
member or player having unpaid fees will not be placed on a
team. There is a $30 Club fee for NSF cheques.
Mail-in registration is available only to returning
2004 players and members of their families. If you received
this newsletter and registration form in the mail, you should
register by mail. You do not need to go to Open Registration.
Please check the information on the preprinted registration
form and make any necessary corrections.
If you want to add a new player, just add the name and information
directly on the printed registration form. If you want to delete
a player, simply put a LINE through the name and information.
Adjust the fees according to the fee table to the right and
change the shirt deposit amount.
Mail-in registration (registration form and 2 cheques) must
be postmarked no later than Feb 15, 2005. Please mail to:
CARLETON PLACE SOCCER CLUB, INC.,
P.O. Box 85,
Carleton Place, Ontario, K7C 3P3
Registration forms must be mailed to the Club’s PO Box,
delivered to the Club registrar or assistant registrar. Do not
give your form to a coach or another Club official.
per family will be assessed. All late-registered
players, including returning players, will be put on a waiting
list and will be placed on a "first come, first served"
basis subject to team availability. Exceptions to the late registration
fee will be made for players new to the community and students
who are away at school.
Open Registration for NEW families will be held:
Location: Carleton Place
Arena in the Board Room
Sunday, February 6, 1:30
p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Thursday, February 10 7:00
p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
The Club pricing structure (cost recovery method) is based
on the cost of fielding a team at the indicated playing level
including a field development charge. This charge will be used
for future field needs. The Board of Directors spends your fees
carefully to provide maintained fields, quality equipment, trained
coaches and referees, and to develop soccer.
Players on ERSL teams are required to pay an additional fee
that goes directly to the League to cover higher refereeing
fees, insurance, league costs, and related charges. The cost
of an extra set of shirts is also a factor.

U10 to U18 players may choose either to play
for the recreational GLSL Club teams or to tryout for the competitive
ERSL Club team. Players not selected for ERSL teams will play
on GLSL teams. U10 and U11 teams play on mini-fields and older
teams play on full fields. Players
will be put immediately on GLSL teams unless “ERSL tryout”
is indicated on the registration form.
For 2005, GLSL will field a U18
female division and U18 mixed division with teams that have
at least 3 females on the field at all times. U18F may continue
to play across.
For 2005, the GLSL
will field a U21 mixed division, if there is sufficient interest.
There must be at least 3 females on the field. U18 players may
play up.
As usual there will be tryouts for player placement on the ERSL
teams at the U10 – U18 age levels. The tryout process
allows the Team Selection Committee to evaluate new and returning
players. All interested players registered in these age groups
will be called with exact dates (late March), times, and locations
of the tryouts. Please be sure to
indicate on your registration form if you want to be contacted
to attend tryouts! Only those players (U10-U18) indicating tryouts
will be called.
Player Books for
Competitive Team Players
Every player on a competitive team must have a valid player
book. Players trying out for competitive
teams must have a Club registration form signed by a parent
before participating in the first tryout. The
player must have Club fees, ERSL fees, copy of birth certificate,
and 2 passport-size, current photos before being selected to
the team. These items will be returned if the player does not
make the team.
Players will not be
permitted to play any games without valid player books.
At printing time this incomplete information
was the best available and is provided as a guideline only.

Our very successful Soccer School program is being revamped
this year to respond to parents suggestions. We hope everyone
enjoys the slightly altered options.
Children born in 2001 can play with parent partners in the Tall’n’Tot
program at the same time as the regular Soccer School. Experienced
coaches will direct parent-accompanied players through enjoyable
soccer experiences.
U7 players may choose to play
a last year of soccer school or to play up on a mixed age U7/8
GLSL team. In our region, most clubs don’t have fields
available to allow U7s to play. Consequently, our Club U7/8
teams will have a challenging season. Teams after 2005 will
have a year more playing experience than those in other clubs.
Soccer School is for
children born in 1998 to 2000. It is held once a week, Thursdays
from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Beckwith Park. The program includes
instruction in the fundamentals of soccer followed by fun games.
Soccer School begins early June and runs to the last week of
August.
All Soccer School
players will be given a team shirt generously donated by Tim
Horton’s Donuts of Carleton Place. Players may keep their
shirts at the end of the season. Shin pads are mandatory and
can be purchased in sporting goods stores. Running shoes or
soccer shoes may be used.
The Carleton Place
Tim Horton’s stores display our teams’ photographs
from 2003 and 2004. Drop in to see them.
It is a requirement of the Ontario Soccer Association (OSA)
that teams be "dressed in the same uniforms". Players
not presenting themselves on the field of play in the Club uniform
will not be permitted to play in a league game.
Players will
receive a Club shirt that
be returned at the end of the soccer season or else the shirt
deposit cheque will be cashed.
The Club provides,
and requires that players wear socks.
The Club
requires that players provide and wear shorts.
Shorts, shin pads, and running shoes or cleats
are the players’responsibility.
Bring a water bottle
to all practices and games. Please take the bottle home or put
it in the garbage at the end of the activity, thank you.
Your coach will contact you before May 12. If you haven’t
been contacted, please contact Steve Dunnill.
Each week there will be one practice
and one game. Coaches will advise you of the specific nights,
times and field locations.
The GLSL season will conclude with a weekend
Cup Tournament at Beckwith Park on August 27 – 28 for
U8, U9 and U18 or September 10 – 11 in Richmond for U10
and older and perhaps the Thursday evening prior to your weekend
as well.
There will be a 3-game U8 GLSL Cup on Saturday, June 11. The
purpose will be to help players, coaches, referees, and parents
develop a constructive relationship. Scheduling details will
be made available at a later date.
The Club plans to field the same competitive teams as we did
in 2004, except at one higher year age level.
Coaches will inform the selected players of the ERSL teams
when and where practices will occur. If there any questions
please contact Ruben Vella.
The Ottawa Carleton Soccer League offers competitive
divisions for both men and women. Our Club enters teams for
both Men and Women. Registration
must be completed and player books received before the player
steps on the field. Otherwise the Coach and Club are
apt to be suspended and or fined, and the insurance of the teams’
players and coaches is invalid.
Our Club expects to have Men’s Division 3 and 5 teams.
We were not successful in fielding an Old Timers Division 6
team last year.
Our Club offers 4 levels of competition for women. Four levels
playing in the OCSL are offered: three for women over 18 years
of age (Divisions 1, 3 and 5) and a new one for Master Ladies
over 30. In addition, there are 3 teams for Master Ladies that
play in the GLSL. GLSL will try to form a Women’s over
40 division this year.
Parents who have a son or daughter away at school may wish
to register the absent player if he or she will be home during
the summer. If at all possible, please pre-register your student
before they return.
The Coaching Committee along with the Team Selection Committee
carries the responsibility for the placement of players on teams.
The criteria are different for GLSL and ERSL team as outlined
on the Club website.
