By the time you read this, the 2004 Summer
Soccer Season will be underway. The coaches will have contacted
the players, practices will have begun and the first games will
have been played. Our Club has approximately 1073 players from
650 families. A special thanks goes to our registrar Hal Garrett
and Assistant registrar Leyla Read and Angela Dyck. We warmly
welcome all returning and new players.
Soccer School has 16 teams of 224 enthusiastic
soccer players aged 5 to 7. Our Club is fielding 34 teams in
the Goulbourn Lanark Soccer League, 4 adult teams in the Ottawa
Carleton Soccer League, and 15 teams from under 10 to U18 in
East Region Soccer League. Good soccer to all teams!
The Club wishes to express our appreciation again for the ongoing
support of Beckwith Township, the Town of Carleton Place and
Mississippi Mills with the development of soccer fields for
the enjoyment of our community.
The advances we’ve made in both the number
and quality of fields amaze those who have been with the Club
for three or more years. A new mini-field sponsored by the people
of J.L. Couroux is now in use. A third full field beside Notre
Dame is under construction. Both fields at Notre Dame have been
seeded and top-dressed. We will be using Carleton Place High
School field this year.
Additional parking at Beckwith Park is available
in the area south of the baseball diamonds. Please be the first
from your team to park up there – it will set an example
for all others arriving after you.
Many thanks to the Read family for getting
fields, goals and nets prepared for the season. Appreciation
is also extended to the volunteers who helped prepare our fields
this spring.
We have a very impressive group of coaches for all our teams
again this year. Their commitment to a positive soccer experience
for players is unparalleled. Most of our GLSL coaches have taken
one of the two Level 1 Community Coaching Certification Clinics
at a cost of $3300. Geraldine Low organized the massive job
masterfully. We are confident their expertise and enthusiasm
will translate into successful a soccer season for all.
We sincerely appreciate all the time and expertise
that Campbell Melvin put into the Club as Head Coach. Reuben
Vella is now the Club Head Coach.
Congratulations to the Coaching Committee –
Reuben Vella, Geraldine Low, Hal Garrett, Carroll O’Keefe,
Angela Dyck, and Richard Kee - for doing the huge job of getting
the players allocated to teams and the coaches assigned.
Irv Emmanuel and Kevin Read are organizing an awesome group
of referees this year. Many of our refs are young people. Encourage
the referees by showing them as much consideration and respect
as you do your own family. Games couldn’t proceed without
them.
The growth of our Club reflects the dedication
of a great number of members who generously give time, energy
and commitment to soccer in our communities. Volunteers make
our Club tick. The coaches, referees, board members and the
many individuals who help with activities all season help the
Club succeed. Thank you to each and every one of you.
We are continually looking for more support.
If you can’t spare some time this season, think about
it for next year. But, during this season, please be encouraging
to everyone who is part of our Club.
Everyone can show support :
| a) |
Be positive with all comments towards
players during practices and during games. |
| b) |
Be respectful of opposing teams.
Acknowledge good plays on both sides. Teams and individuals
learn and improve with competition. |
| c) |
Show respect for all referees whether
from our Club or other clubs. The refs are the ones who
have passed tests on the rules and they are essential
to the games. Keep spectator comments either positive
or silent. |
| d) |
Support your coaches and managers.
They are giving freely of their time so the games and
practices can go on. Do not ask them to drive, or leave
them alone with players |
| e) |
Thank members of your Board of Directors
when you next see them. They freely spend many, many hours
each month throughout the year to ensure the winter and
summer seasons run as smoothly as possible. Constructive
suggestions are welcome; more so if accompanied by a willingness
to participate. |
| f) |
Join the winning team; volunteer
a few hours to help. Talk with someone on the Club Contact
List. |
We are looking forward to a terrific season
of exciting soccer in our area. Come out and enjoy it with your
player.
We are pleased to recognize the support of
our community for the Soccer Club. Please
show support for our sponsors.
Throughout the year, the Royal
Canadian Legion provides photocopying privileges
for the Soccer Club. We gratefully acknowledge their ongoing
support and cooperation.
Tim
Horton’s continues to support the youngest
players by providing shirts for each team of Soccer School.
A free Timbit and drink for each player on Soccer School night
are enjoyed by all the kids. We extend our sincere thanks to
Dave Peters and all the Tim Horton’s staff.
Jay Colebourne is the owner of the Petro
Canada station on Hwy 7. Please pay him a visit and
thank him for sponsoring our Club with the Nevada tickets sales.

It” soccer tournament at Beckwith Park for 12 women’s

Anyone in high school can use this to count towards their volunteer
program commitment that they need to graduate.
Anyone interested in some exciting soccer with
fun face painting, raffle tables, live entertainment and lots
of refreshments is very welcome. For more information or donations
of any kind for our cause, or if you would like to volunteer

NOTE: the new GLSL website is www.glsl.ca.
The awards and trophies won for the season
games will be presented on these two weekends.
The League Cup is a weekend of soccer with
separate games, playoffs and awards. The players love this format.
Count on your first Cup game to be scheduled on the Thursday
before your weekend. Again this year, we’ll try to have
the round robins completed by the end of Saturday.
The end of soccer school season BBQ is sponsored
by Dr. Rob Earle, Chiropractor. We are very grateful for his
generous support.
On a safety note, please do not drop off players
and leave the soccer area. If you must leave, please place your
child in another parent’s care, and inform the player
and the coach of who that care person is. Soccer is a physical
sport where serious injuries are possible. Not only would coaches
have logistical problems taking an unsupervised child to the
hospital, but we would also have problems contacting the player’s
parents.
Please watch for the next newsletter which
will contain the full details about our year end wrap-up.
